Aftercare guide
Blackstone Garden Rooms
For a Garden Room to last a lifetime, it needs some care and attention. This guide provides everything you need to get the very best from your investment.
To maximise the life, health and usage of your Garden room follow these steps...

Painting Your Garden Room

All of the cladding options for your Blackstone Garden Room are either pressure-treated or thermally-treated to provide excellent resistance to moisture, rot and insect infestation. The cladding will withstand the Scottish weather without any additional treatment, but cosmetic changes will occur.

Do I have to paint my Blackstone Garden Room?

If you have chosen a Sadolin colour for your Garden Room, it will arrive with a base coat in your chosen colour. The building then requires a finishing coat of paint around 3 weeks after installation.

If you have chosen a clear primer, a second coat is not required unless you wish to preserve the original finish of the building. Over time as the primer degrades the timber will weather to a silvery grey colour. To preserve the original finish, reapply a coat of primer every 3-5 years.

If you have chosen Radiata cladding for your Blackstone Garden Room, this comes with a protective coat of Osmo oil. Without further treatment, the timber will weather over time to a silvery grey colour. To preserve the original finish, reapply Osmo every 3-5 years.

While it is possible to paint Close Board & Strap cladding, the rough-sawn boards require at least twice as much Sadolin as weatherboard cladding.

Should I paint the inside of my Blackstone Garden Room?

Your Garden Room will be finished with V’d redwood lining, plasterboard, or a combination of these materials. The redwood lining can be painted or left unpainted.

If you choose to paint your walls, the best practice is to apply an antifungal base coat before applying your main colour. Roxil, Barretine, Sikagard or Dulux Weathershield are all appropriate antifungal treatments for timber. Once you apply this coat according to the product instructions, apply your choice of interior paint.

Doors & Windows

Over the years you may find small changes in your Garden Room’s personnel doors and windows. These are caused by natural timber movement which can occur over time.

If your doors or windows have moved so much that you can’t close or open them, there is a straightforward carpentry method to rectify them.

We offer a service to do this at our hourly rate. Alternatively, any reputable joiner will be able to carry out the work

Roofs & Guttering

Your Garden Room comes with either steel box profile or Isola shingle roofing.

Steel box profile roofing has a 20-year manufacturer’s guarantee and a lifespan of at least 30 years.

Isola Shingles have a 30-year manufacturer’s guarantee and a lifespan of at least 40 years.

Neither roofing material has any maintenance requirements.

If you have opted for guttering on your Garden Room, make sure to check this twice yearly and clean out any leaves or blockages. More regular checks may be necessary if there are overhanging trees above the building.

Flooring

If you have opted for laminate flooring in your Garden Room, clean this with a disposable floor wipe mop rather than a wet mop. This prevents excess moisture from building up inside your garden room.

If you have chosen alternative flooring, apply this principle by using a cleaning method that avoids excess moisture.

If any liquid spills happen inside your Garden Room, make sure to ventilate the building well once you have cleaned these up.

FAQs

Will my Garden Room’s contents affect its performance?

The 5-Tier structure of your Blackstone Garden Room will prevent moisture from getting into your building. However, if you store wet items inside the building, you bring moisture into the Garden Room.

This moisture can evaporate into the air and then condense on the Garden Room’s walls and contents. To prevent this, dry off excess moisture from wet items with a towel and remove the towel from the building.
