What floor comes with a Radiata Garden Room as standard?
Our Radiata Garden Rooms come with a 19mm tongue-and-groove Scandinavian redwood subfloor.
Why Scandinavian redwood? We use Redwood instead of Radiata for the building floor because Radiata timber is only available as cladding rather than the tongue-and-groove profile we require for the flooring. We love redwood because it is slow-growing. This makes it sturdy and weather-resistant – exactly what we need in Scotland!
Why tongue-and-groove? We use tongue-and-groove to make the floor because it slots together, creating a sturdy base that can easily carry the load of the building.
Why do I need to add flooring to my Radiata Garden Room?
The Radiata Garden Room floor, though sturdy, serves as a subfloor. We recommend that you add some type of flooring over the top of it to protect it and make it look its best.
Does flooring protect the subfloor?
Without flooring on top, the subfloor is open to damage and wear and tear. This is why we recommend using flooring such as laminate. If any damage occurred to the laminate, you could easily replace the broken board. However, it is much more difficult to fix the subfloor of your garden room.
Think of this as adding a mattress protector over your mattress. You can easily throw a mattress protector in the wash – but fitting your mattress in the washing machine to clean it is a different story. It’s always best to add an extra layer of protection over the subfloor to ensure longevity.
Does flooring enhance the building’s aesthetic?
Another reason to add flooring to your Radiata Garden Room is for aesthetic purposes. You’ve spent all this money on a beautiful garden room – it’s going to be your pride and joy! You don’t want it looking unfinished with its subfloor on display. Adding flooring over the top will bring the room together and give it a polished look.

Why doesn’t the laminate flooring come as standard?
Our laminate flooring is an added extra. We’ve learned that customers often want the freedom to choose the type of flooring in their building. Many people want the flooring in their garden room to match the flooring in their home. Or, they already have a pack of leftover flooring from old projects they want to use.
Why do G&M use laminate flooring?
We find that laminate flooring is the most compatible option to use with our Radiata Garden Rooms. The laminate flooring we use comes with an underlay, which allows the subfloor to breathe. This is key for the timber floor!
What are the benefits of laminate flooring?
Durability: You’ll likely be spending a lot of time in your garden room. Laminate is strong and very resistant to dents and marks. This makes it great for a high-traffic space because it will ensure your flooring stays functional and looks great for a long time.
Low Maintenance: Our Radiatas are our lowest maintenance product and we wanted this to extend to their flooring as well. Even if you’re using your garden room as an art studio or as a kids’ playroom, a quick sweep or mop will have the flooring looking as good as new.
Versatility: Laminate flooring is available in a wide range of colours. Our laminate options are carefully chosen to complement the interiors of our Radiata Garden Rooms.

Does G&M fit the laminate flooring?
Yes! If you choose to have laminate flooring added to your Radiata Garden Room, then our finishing joiners will fit the flooring for you. Here’s how the process works:
- The finishing joiners will arrive at your property after your building has been assembled by the delivery team (usually the day after).
- They will begin by insulating your building.
- Once it’s insulated, they will add the lining.
- Then they lay the laminate. This usually takes a few hours.
- After the laminate is done, they add the finishing strips and skirtings to the interior.
If you choose to have an alternative flooring option (not supplied by G&M) you will have to arrange to have this fitted yourself. In this case, the finishing joiners will fit the finishing strips to the walls but leave the skirting off, for you to add once your flooring has been put down.
What other flooring options can I have?
Radiata Garden Rooms are compatible with a variety of flooring types. Here are a few different flooring options that you could choose from:
Carpet: This could be a great choice if you’re looking to create a cosy and relaxing space. The one thing to keep in mind with carpet is that it needs to have the right type of underlay underneath it so that the timber subfloor can still breathe.
Rubber: This is probably the most ideal flooring choice if you want to set up your Radiata Garden Room as a home gym. Most commercial gyms will have areas of rubber flooring in the weights section. This protects the flooring underneath and the weights from getting damaged.
Vinyl: Like laminate, vinyl is low maintenance, inexpensive and comes in a variety of styles. However, vinyl tends not to have as luxurious a look as other flooring options like hardwood or laminate.
Hardwood Flooring: This is a high-quality flooring option which also looks great and would match the aesthetic of a Radiata Garden Room well. However, hardwood flooring can be quite expensive.
