Will a timber garage protect my car?

Whether it’s an Aston Martin DB5 or a Ford Mondeo, a car is more than just a chunk of metal and glass. It’s your passport to freedom; access to the open road. Maybe you want to park it and leave it, or maybe it’s a classic beaut that takes up all your spare time. Either way, you need to know that your car is safe and protected. A timber garage gives you the space to house your car and the comforting knowledge that it’s protected and secure.

Will all timber garages protect my car?

Of course, not all timber garages are the same. They vary in size, design, price and quality, and as such will offer varying levels of protection. 

How can I make sure that a timber garage will protect my car?

The most important feature of a timber garage is the wall construction. Since garages are large buildings designed to house valuable objects – like your car – they have to be watertight to stay solid.

How do you make a completely watertight garage?

Back in 2013, we had so many problems with garages letting in water that we knew we had to go back to the drawing board. Our specification at that time just wasn’t standing up to the Scottish weather. 

In a big building like a garage, water ingress causes big problems. In the worst cases, we had no choice but to build a second layer of garage around the existing building to make sure that water didn’t cause any issues. 

This was an extreme (and expensive) solution. But ultimately this tactic led us to our new garage specification. A 3-Tier wall construction with an outer layer of cladding, an air cavity and breather membrane, and a layer of OSB on the inside of the building. Combined with steel box profile roofing and a solid timber roof, these garages are purpose-built to protect anything that you put inside.

What was our specification in 2013, back when we had problems with water ingress?

We were building pretty damn solid timber garages, but there was one fundamental problem: they were single-skinned buildings.

What does this mean? A single-skinned building has a timber frame, then a single layer (or skin) of timber cladding on the outside. The roof has a single layer of timber with a roofing material affixed on top.

You’ll find this specification is the most common type of timber garage out there. The vast majority of buildings are single-skinned, built from a range of different types of timber, and use a variety of cladding thicknesses. But essentially, these buildings are just big sheds.

Now, we were building high-spec single-skinned garages. We’re excellent at what we do, but our single-skinned garages still had water ingress issues. Because the fact is: single-skinned timber garages are pretty good at keeping water out most of the time.

But when you need to protect a car, pretty good most of the time isn’t good enough. You need your garage to be completely watertight so that your car isn’t susceptible to rust, damp or mould. That’s what we believe, and that’s what led to our specification change.

Why should I choose a timber garage to protect my car?

Timber isn’t your only option for a garage, of course. But timber garages do have one major advantage that helps keep your car free from rust and corrosion.

Brick and concrete garages are far more prone to condensation than our timber garages are. 

This is because both of these materials are poorer insulators than timber, air and OSB. Their thermal conductivity means that concrete and brick garage walls generally feel cold. Thermal conductivity is the rate at which heat passes through a material. Brick and concrete walls get cold because heat passes through them easily.

Then, any moisture in the air will condense on these cold walls and can pool inside the building. This creates ideal conditions for mould and rot within the building itself. More importantly, your car can then rust and corrode if this moisture persists. 

In a single-skinned timber garage, any moisture inside is absorbed by the timber walls. This eventually passes to the outside of the building, keeping your garage contents dry. However, the problem is that moisture can also travel into the building this way, which is how water ingress happens. 

Our 3-Tier Garages help keep warm air inside the building. The walls stay relatively warm because of the insulating materials used in their construction. 

This means that a tiered timber garage is least likely to suffer from condensation. And because of the air gap and breather membrane, water can’t penetrate the walls like in a single-skinned building.
