Why don’t people buy a Gillies & Mackay Workshop?

Buying a timber workshop is a big decision and it’s not always an easy one. We love our Workshops here at Gillies & Mackay. From their unique 3-Tier construction to their uPVC window and door combination, we’re incredibly proud of what we build.

But we also know they’re not the cheapest option on the market, which means they won’t be the right choice for everyone.

Whether you’re considering buying from us and have a few hesitations, or you’re simply wondering why we charge what we do, this blog explores the most common reasons people don’t go ahead with a Gillies & Mackay Workshop and the thinking behind them.

Why is a G&M Workshop so expensive?

Gillies & Mackay Workshops range from £6,969 – £15,825 placing them at the higher end of the market. Understandably, not everyone can justify that level of investment in a timber building. When you can find a timber workshop for £500 you might be thinking that we’re mad for charging this much.

But, we don’t price our Workshops this way at random – there is a method to our madness.

A G&M Workshop is designed to perform in the Scottish weather, and built to last. The materials we use, our in-house manufacturing here in Errol, and our smart construction methods all contribute to the cost. Every Workshop comes with a 30-Year Guarantee, because we really do believe they’re built to last a lifetime.

While we believe the long-term value outweighs the initial cost, we also recognise that we won’t be the right fit for every budget.

Is a G&M Workshop any different from a budget workshop?

If you come across our price list without knowing much about us, it’s easy to question how our Workshops could be any different from a standard timber building. But a G&M Workshop isn’t your run-of-the-mill shed.

Our Workshops are built using our 3-Tier specification – which is a wall construction that’s designed to keep the building completely watertight. This is something most timber workshops in Scotland don’t offer. Many workshops are built with a single-skin construction, where just one layer of timber forms the wall. The downside of single-skinned timber buildings, especially large ones, is that they’re vulnerable to water ingress.

Instead, our Workshop walls are built using layers:

    • 70mm x 45mm pressure-treated C24-Graded framing – acts as the backbone of the Workshop.
    • 9mm OSB – adds strength to the wall.
    • 22mm breather membrane and cavity – prevents moisture reaching the interior.
    • 19mm Scandinavian redwood tongue and groove weatherboard – the first line of defence against moisture and the elements.

Each layer plays an important role in keeping the Workshop dry, strong, and lasting for decades.

It’s not all about the walls though, our Workshops feature steel roofing and uPVC windows and doors as standard. These choices are key to maintaining the watertight nature of the building, and its long lifespan.

Without understanding these differences, it’s easy to assume all workshops are broadly the same. In reality, the performance and longevity can be very different.

How does buying a G&M Workshop actually work?

At first glance, it can feel like there are a lot of moving parts and this can cause uncertainty for customers. But in reality we’re here to project manage your Workshop each step of the way.

    Here’s how the process works:

    • Consultation: The process begins with a no-obligation Consultation, which can take place at our Show Area, over the phone, or via video call. Our Sales Team will discuss your plans and help you decide on key elements. You’ll then receive a tailored quote for your proposed Workshop.
    • Groundwork & Electrical Introductions: If you want electrics included in your project, we’ll introduce you to one of our accredited electricians, who will carry out a site visit and provide a quote. The same applies to groundworks – if you don’t already have a slabbed or concrete base in place, we’ll connect you with one of our approved groundwork teams and they’ll do a site visit.
    • Order Confirmation: Once the site visits are complete and you’re happy to proceed, we’ll confirm your order, take a 30% deposit, and schedule your delivery date.
    • Groundworks Commence: Your base needs to be built a week or two before your delivery date to give it time to set. Usually, groundworks are completed within 2 – 7 days.
    • Delivery Day: Our delivery team will arrive at your property and assemble your Workshop. This tends to be complete within a single day.
    • Electrical Installation: If you’re having electricity installed, the electricians will carry out the electrical fit usually the day after the building has been installed.

Without a clear understanding of this process, it’s easy to feel unsure about how everything comes together. But we make sure everything is explained upfront and you’re supported at every stage.

      Do I need a G&M Workshop?

Sometimes, people don’t go ahead with a G&M Workshop because they find that another building type is a better fit.

For example, our Workshops and Garages are built using the same 3-Tier specification, however, a Garage might be a better fit if you need a larger sized building, or a concrete floor that can support a car.

Alternatively, if your priority is a more polished internal finish, and a space that’s fully lined and insulated, then a Garden Room might be a better choice.

Our goal is to help you find the right building for your needs, even if it isn’t a G&M Workshop.

Why don’t people buy a Gillies & Mackay Workshop?

A G&M Workshop isn’t the right choice for everyone, and we’re completely honest about that.

If you’re looking for the cheapest option or something temporary, there are plenty of other options that will suit your needs.

But, if you’re looking for a Workshop that’s built to last, performs well in all weather, and gives you a space you can rely on for years to come, then it’s worth taking the time to understand what makes a G&M Workshop different.
