Why is Gillies & Mackay the best place to learn about sheds in Scotland?

Gillies & Mackay is Scotland’s go-to online garden building destination – a treasure trove of knowledge and craftsmanship. Their dedication to transparency ensures that wherever you buy a shed, you’re not just making a purchase – you’re making an informed investment. This commitment to education and quality, rooted in a storied tradition of craftsmanship passed down through generations, sets Gillies & Mackay apart as the premier resource for anyone in Scotland looking to understand and invest in a garden shed.

But why are we sharing all this insider knowledge? And why should you trust us to help you learn about sheds?

We have thirty-five years of experience in the timber building business.

We’re no strangers to a good shed. Grant Gillies and John Mackay, the founders of the business, have been making timber garden buildings in Scotland for 35 years.

There have been a lot of changes in that time – the business has grown and developed, the range of products we make has shifted, and we’re now a third-generation family business.

Some team members have been with the company for all of those 35 years. Several have been part of G&M since they were just 16 years old. Everyone benefits from Grant & John’s knowledge and experience, and the senior company members continue to pass on their skills to the younger generation.

We build Scottish sheds for Scottish gardens.

No one understands the Scottish weather like the Scots. The whole world knows that it rains a lot here, but they usually think we’re joking when we explain just how much it rains here!

From the very beginning, Gillies & Mackay Sheds have been built to withstand the Scottish climate. We’re not shipping our buildings off to climates we have no experience of, and all of our engineering decisions are geared towards keeping the weather out.

From the timber we select to the roofing materials we use, to the framing that supports all of our buildings, we’re constructing buildings that last a lifetime, no matter what the Scottish weather has to say.

We have a culture of constant research, development and improvement.

Grant & John knew they could improve on the garden sheds that were available to their landscaping customers 35 years ago, and that’s exactly what they did. They created Sheds they could be proud of, and were happy to put their names on.

That culture of improvement is central to the success of Gillies & Mackay’s buildings. If something isn’t working, we look for the reasons why, and we address those reasons.

Sometimes this means making bold decisions, and sometimes it means raising prices. But the continued pursuit of excellence informs every aspect of Gillies & Mackay’s working practices. We want the best, and that’s what we work towards at all times.

We have an ever-growing library of free, helpful content.

Our content library dates back to 2015 when CEO Cara started educating the world wide web about the surprisingly complex domain of timber garden buildings.

Using the principles of They Ask, You Answer, a model that aims to educate customers rather than giving them the hard sell, Cara started producing written and video content to inform visitors to our website about the ins and outs of buying a timber building.

As the business grew, the Sales Team began contributing to this library of content, and eventually, we hired Amy, our Content Writer. Her job is to learn from our team of experts, and then communicate what she learns to anyone out there who wants to know whether they’re buying a lifetime shed or a leaky eyesore.

Amy publishes new content regularly, in response to customer questions, online search queries and trends in the business. Sometimes she creates handy resources like our Shed Buyer’s Guide, a downloadable resource to help you navigate the world of shed-buying. And when she doesn’t know the answer to a question, she heads to the workshop to find someone who can help. This combination of expert knowledge and clear communication ensures that you can find the answers to all your questions. And if for some reason you can’t find what you’re looking for, drop us a line and we’ll get to it!

We make our content available to anyone who needs it.

You don’t have to be a Gillies & Mackay customer to use our content to learn about sheds. It’s all right here in our Learning Centre, absolutely free of charge, and available to anyone with an internet connection. There’s no paywall, no gatekeeping, and no aspect of the timber buildings industry we won’t write about.

The purpose of our content library is to educate you, the consumer, so that you can make informed decisions about the products that suit your needs and your budget best. There’s no catch. We just happen to think that people should know what they’re getting when they buy a timber building.

So if you need to know whether a plastic, metal or timber shed would be best for you, we have a blog post that tells you all about each type of product. If you’re trying to find out about the best composite garden rooms out there, Amy has already done the hard work of scouring the market so you don’t have to.

We’re the only timber garden building company in Scotland providing you with the information you need to decipher shed specifications, navigate the confusing world of timber, and understand whether or not you’re getting value for money.

We’re not afraid to highlight problems as well as benefits.

We don’t just build sheds, garages and garden rooms. We also repair and maintain sheds, garages and garden rooms. So we know about all the things that can go wrong because we’ve seen them all over the years.

So if you want to know how to avoid common problems like mould or timber movement, we have blog posts that cover these.

We could pretend that these problems don’t happen, but we don’t think that’s very responsible. If something does go wrong with one of our buildings, we do our best to help resolve that situation.

We’re not trying to dupe you into buying a building that won’t suit your circumstances. That doesn’t help anyone. As you learn about sheds we want you to be 100% clear on what can go wrong as well as what can go right. That way you won’t encounter any unexpected surprises.

Our content is written by real people with real experience.

We’re not the only timber garden building company in Scotland providing content to help you learn about sheds. But we are the only timber garden building company with a dedicated in-house Content Writer who researches and writes that content based on 35 years of expertise.

These days you can ask an AI tool to write a blog post about timber garages in less than a few minutes. Most of the time you’ll get reasonably good information. But you’ll get reasonably good generic information about how most timber garages perform. (Spoiler alert: not all that brilliantly. Most of them leak.)

If you want to know why we make the decisions we make about our buildings, have a look at our content. We’ve got nothing to hide. We explain all of those decisions in our blog posts. We remind you that you have plenty of choices, and we give our expert opinions on what should drive those choices. After that, it’s up to you. Choose a Gillies & Mackay Shed. Choose from another manufacturer. Or choose a shed from B&Q. As long as it’s an informed choice, you’ll know exactly what you can expect from your investment.

Also, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. While there might be AI generators out there who can mimic Cara’s no-nonsense mic-drops, Amy’s geeky enthusiasm, or Nicola’s flights of fancy, they certainly can’t create them for themselves.

Wha’s like us? Damn few, and they don’t know anything about garden buildings!

You can watch our content as well as read it.

You can put faces to the names behind the blog posts by checking out the hours of video content we’ve produced over the years. Sometimes it helps to see something rather than just read about it, and if you’re not much of a reader, you might need your information packaged differently as you learn about sheds.

Many of our blog posts contain video clips that accompany the written content. We also have a YouTube channel, a Facebook page, Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok. You can choose how you access our information in the way that suits you best.

Why is Gillies & Mackay the best place to learn about sheds in Scotland?

Knowledge is power, and when you step into the confusing and often contradictory world of timber garden buildings, it’s easy to feel powerless. To avoid this, we’re committed to providing you with all the information you need to make the best choices when buying a shed. Our regular blog posts, social media updates and written and video content mean that you can learn all about the best garden shed for your needs long before you step into a showroom or pick up the phone.
