Radiata Garden Rooms

Guaranteed for 30 years, your Radiata Garden Room is built to last a lifetime. Its innovative Radiata ThermoWood cladding has been treated with heat and steam to provide excellent protection from moisture, rot and insect damage.

Your 4-layer, fully-insulated walls, roof and floor are designed to keep moisture out of your building, ensuring a year-round dedicated space, whatever you choose to use it for.

To maximise the life, health and usage of your garden room, follow these steps...

Exterior Care & Finish

Your Radiata Garden Room comes with a preservative base coat which protects it during transit and installation. Your cladding is naturally protected from moisture, so it isn’t necessary to recoat your building unless you want to retain the original dark brown colour of the timber.

Timber Finish Changes

Untreated, the dark brown colour of the timber will change over time to a pale blond tone, and will eventually weather to a silvery grey colour. This is a natural process that does not impact the structural integrity of your building in any way. Please note that these changes may not be uniform and will depend on the building’s exposure to sunlight and weather.

This is the lowest-maintenance option for your building and if you are happy with these colour changes, you do not have to treat your building in any way.

Oiling Your Radiata Garden Room

Alternatively you can choose to maintain the original colour of the timber or allow the timber to weather to your desired shade. This involves coating your building with Osmo UV Protection Oil, which is available in clear and tinted shades.

Light Red Cedar is the shade closest to the original finish of Radiata ThermoWood and can be applied to restore the original colour or to prevent weathering. If you wish to prevent weathering you should apply this product to your Garden Room around 3 weeks after installation.

A mixture of Clear and Light Red Cedar oils can be used to standardise the tone if more weathering has occurred on one part of the building or if you have chosen to allow partial weathering.

To maintain your chosen finish, you should clean your building and reapply Osmo in your desired shade each year.

Do I have to paint the inside of my RADIATA Garden Room?

You can leave the redwood lining unpainted or paint it according to your preference. The best practice for painting interior woodwork is to apply an antifungal base coat before applying your main colour.

Roxil, Barretine, Sikagard or Dulux Weathershield are all appropriate antifungal treatments. Once you apply this coat according to the product instructions, the weatherboard can be coated with wax, oil or emulsion paint.

Cleaning Your Radiata Garden Room

As with anything else in your garden, you may find over time that your Garden Room needs to be cleaned to remove surface dirt or dust. You can clean your building with Osmo Decking Cleaner, following the manufacturer’s instructions. This product is also ideal for cleaning your building before reapplying oil.

Please note that pressure washers should not be used on timber buildings.

Osmo UV Protection Oil is an organic compound that can be susceptible to surface mould. If this appears on your building it is easily cleaned off using Osmo Decking Cleaner and is no indication of structural damage.

Can I paint my Radiata Garden Room a solid colour?

Bear in mind that once your Garden Room is painted, the only way to recover the original natural colour is to sand or strip the entire building. But if you do want to change the appearance of the building, we recommend Sadolin Classic.

This oil-based paint is available in 13 standard and 50 tinted shades. Sadolin is only available from registered stockists. Our closest supplier is Bannerman’s Colour Studio in either Perth or Dundee. You can also buy Sadolin online at Decorating Warehouse.

Flooring

If you have opted for laminate flooring in your Garden Room, clean this with a disposable floor wipe mop rather than a wet mop. This prevents excess moisture from building up inside your garden room. If you have chosen alternative flooring, apply this principle by using a cleaning method that avoids excess moisture.

To protect the timber inside your Garden Room, ventilate the building well after any liquid spills.

Roofs & Guttering

Depending on the model, your Garden Room comes with steel box profile or Isola shingle roofing.

Steel box profile roofing has a 20-year manufacturer’s guarantee and a lifespan of at least 30 years. Isola Shingles have a 30-year manufacturer’s guarantee and a lifespan of at least 40 years. Neither roofing material has any maintenance requirements.

If you have opted for guttering on your Garden Room, make sure to check this twice yearly and clean out any leaves or blockages. More regular checks may be necessary if there are overhanging trees above the building.

Doors & Windows

Over the years you may find small changes in your Garden Room’s doors and windows. These are caused by natural timber frame movement which can occur over time.

If your doors or windows have moved so much that you can’t close or open them, there is a straightforward carpentry method to rectify this. We offer a service to do this at our hourly rate. Alternatively, any reputable joiner will be able to carry out the work.

temperature & airflow

Garden Rooms can warm up quickly in direct sunlight. To protect the interior, it’s important to avoid excessive heat build-up.

Make use of the “openlock” feature on your double-glazed windows. This allows you to ventilate the room securely while you’re away. Regular airflow helps maintain a stable and healthy environment inside.

We recommend fitting blinds to your Garden Room windows to reduce direct solar gain and keep the room cool. Blinds will help filter sunlight, maintain a pleasant temperature, and add extra privacy to your Garden Room.

A large rug is a simple way to protect flooring in high-sunlight areas while also adding comfort, warmth, and style to your space.
