Mark I Summerhouses

In 2023 Gillies & Mackay called time on their longstanding Summerhouse specification. For 30 years we handcrafted beautiful timber Summerhouses, built specifically for you to enjoy your garden, but with seasonal shelter and comfort in mind.

These buildings could withstand most of what the Scottish climate threw at them and they continue to stand the test of time today.

However, the expectation of these seasonal buildings to perform all year round has become increasingly higher. The rise in wholesale Garden Rooms means that our humble Summerhouse – with its single-skinned walls and single-glazed windows and doors – is no longer perceived as a labour of love. Instead, the maintenance needed for their longevity has become an inconvenience and the specification has become outdated.

Mark I Summerhouse Facts

Moisture & Single skinned buildings

There is a possibility that your single-skinned building will allow moisture through its walls - this is especially to be expected in extremely wet weather. The best way to manage this is to allow the building to breathe with the help of a dehumidifier.

Timber Windows & Doors

There is a high chance that your timber windows and doors will contract, becoming swollen in wet weather and shrinking in dry weather. This often results in them needing adjustment to operate properly.

With these facts in mind, the ongoing maintenance isn't for everyone and we completely understand that.

That's why, for the past 30 years we have offered an alternative - a fully insulated and lined building with a breather cavity to allow the external wall to deal with the moisture on the outside, not the inside. These buildings are fitted with uPVC double-glazed units, and although uPVC still sometimes needs adjusting, it's never to the same degree as timber.

These buildings were and are, of course, considerably more expensive and commonly 'out of budget' for most. So the Summerhouse prevailed for a while.

But after much thought and a few tears, it’s time to say goodbye to our Summerhouse specification.

Fully Insulated & Lined

  • Internal breather cavity of 20mm created against the external wall
  • 50mm EcoTherm Foilback Insulation
  • 16mm V'd Lining.

This is done to the walls and roof. The internal floor can be done as an optional extra.

We can replace all fixed and opening timber windows with uPVC Double Glazed Units that fit the size of opening your G&M Mark I Summerhouse has as standard. Windows are top hung when opening.

All double-glazed units are available in either White or Anthracite Grey.

Conditions & Process

This is a new service that we're offering and so, to begin with, we're only able to offer it to Mark I Summerhouses that are under 5 years old, due to specification changes prior to that time.

We can only carry out works on Summerhouses that are within 30 miles of Errol.
We must conduct a Site Visit prior to commitment of order to ensure the building is of sound disposition and has not been modified in a way that we cannot work with.
50% Deposit is required on order.
