At Gillies & Mackay, we’ve been delivering and assembling our timber Garages for over 30 years. That means we’ve perfected our process from start to finish. But we also know that for many of our customers, it’s their first time having a Garage delivered. So some uncertainty can be expected.
Maybe you’re feeling a bit apprehensive about your timber Garage going up. Or you’re unsure about how disruptive delivery will be. We understand! Whatever the case, this blog will ease your worries and explain each stage of the journey. From groundworks to the completion of your timber Garage.

Pre-Delivery: What happens with groundworks?
The first stage of your timber Garage journey starts before the delivery day has even arrived, with the construction of your concrete base.
As part of our project management service, we’ll coordinate your groundwork for you. After your initial consultation, we’ll introduce you to one of our accredited groundworks teams who will carry out a site visit and give you a quote.
A site visit is essential for pricing and planning because things like excavation needs and site access can significantly affect labour and timings. If you require a trench for your electricity cable or you’re planning on having a ramp installed to your Garage, these are things that will be noted during the site visit, to ensure everything is planned ahead of time.
The Groundworks Process
2 – 4 weeks before delivery: The groundworks team begins construction of your concrete base.
Concrete base construction 2 – 7 days to complete:
- Excavation
- Compacting Type 1 hardcore
- Building the timber frame
- Pouring the concrete
Depending on how complex your site is, your concrete base will take from 2 – 7 days to complete.
1 – 3 weeks before delivery: Once your concrete base is complete, it needs time to set before we deliver your timber Garage.

What will happen on Delivery Day?
The big day has finally arrived! The delivery team – usually a team of three – will be with you in the morning. Depending on the size of your timber Garage, the team will have two (single garage) or three vans (double garage) with them.
During your consultation, one of our Sales Team members will have gone through the site access form with you. This helps us plan things like where the delivery team will park on the day, and how far they’ll have to carry the panels to the spot where they will be assembled.
The only thing you’ll need to think about on the morning of delivery is that the place you’ve planned for the team to park is clear, and that the route to the base is left as clear as possible.
The Assembly Process
The deliverers will park the vans, begin to unload their tools and your Garage, which comes split into panels, and carry them to the base.
The team put the wall panels in place.
Then they position the trust and attach it to the walls.
The roof panels go on top, and your Garage begins to take shape.
The team fixes the membrane and timber battens to the timber roof.
Then they secure the sheets of metal on top of the battens.
Finally, the deliverers fit the uPVC windows and personnel door.
Your timber Garage delivery is now complete! This takes a day for a single Garage, and two days for a double Garage.
After Delivery: What about the Garage Door, Electricity and Lining & Insulating?
The timeline after delivery depends on the additional options you’ve selected for your Garage, including electricity, lining and insulation, or both.
Garage Body & Door Only
- Day 1: Garage Delivery
- Day 2: Garage Door Fitted
Garage with Electricity (No lining & insulation)
- Day 1: Garage Delivery
- Day 2: Electrics Fitted
- Day 3: Garage Door Fitted
Garage with Electricity & Lining and Insulation
- Day 1: Garage Delivery
- Day 2: Electricians complete the First Fit (installing the armoured cable and running wiring)
- Day 3 and 4: Our Finishing Team lines and insulates your Garage.
- Day 5: Electricians return for the Final Fit (adding sockets, switches & light fittings)
- Day 6: Garage Door Fitted
The electricians work on separate days from our delivery and finishing teams to make sure everyone has enough space to complete their job safely.
